Hours Calculator — Hours Between Times
From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break is 8 hours worked — 8.50 hours on the clock, 8.00 after the break.
How it works
The timesheet question: I started at this time, finished at that time, took this much break — how many hours did I work? The answer comes as hours and minutes, as a decimal (the format payroll wants), and as total minutes. Add an hourly rate and the panel adds gross pay for the shift.
Overnight shifts work too: if the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as running past midnight.
The method
Gross minutes = end − start (plus 24 hours when the end is not after the start). Net = gross − break. Decimal hours = net ÷ 60; pay = decimal hours × rate, before any taxes or overtime rules.
Frequently asked questions
How do I enter a shift that crosses midnight?
Just enter the clock times — 22:00 to 06:00, for example. Because the end is earlier than the start, the calculator adds a day and reports 8 hours.
What is decimal hours?
Hours expressed as a decimal fraction: 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 hours. Payroll systems almost always want this format, which is why it is printed alongside.
Does it calculate overtime?
No — overtime rules depend on your employer, state and contract. This gives the clean hours figure that overtime rules then build on.
